[Khaled]
The world is changing, ethnically and religiously. What once was a
majority is not a minority. Can you say California?

Hence the battle lines

[Krimel]
When I was a lad we were taught American Values. It was the peak of the Cold
War and we learned the bill of rights. We memorized things like "Give me
your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." In
second grade I assumed that the only reason places like Eastern Europe
didn't apply for statehood was because the communists wouldn't let them. But
I was proud to be part of a country that helped others, offered shelter to
refugees, supported freedom of expression, freedom of inquiry and respected
the choices made by citizens.

Consider our national goals in those times. We began the Peace Corps to
spread freedom through education, health care and building infrastructure.
We encouraged science education to expand research and extend human
consciousness into the upper atmosphere and beyond. We ended a hundred years
of discrimination against black citizens and expanded the range of options
open to women. We declared war on poverty, hunger and exploitation. We
enacted legislation to require producers to clean up their mess and actually
bear the full cost of production.

In short by adhering to the ideals spelled out in our constitution we were
the good guys. Our aim was to make the world a better, safer place for our
children and grandchildren.

It is truly sad to see how far we have strayed.
