on the issue of intellect and animals.....
animals do not have intellect but they are intelligent. everything is
intelligent.
i am mistaken here? it seems to me that this simple distinction -
intellect/intelligence - clears up a lot of confusion.

[Krimel]
It is not surprising that the term intelligence gives people fits. Nowhere
will you find a consistent and coherent definition. For example, Howard
Gardner proposes that there are eight "intelligences" which he identifies as
follows:

Linguistic intelligence ("word smart"):
Logical-mathematical intelligence ("number/reasoning smart")
Spatial intelligence ("picture smart")
Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence ("body smart")
Musical intelligence ("music smart")
Interpersonal intelligence ("people smart")
Intrapersonal intelligence ("self smart")
Naturalist intelligence ("nature smart")

Daniel Goleman argues for an emotional intelligence suggesting I suppose
that Gardner missed one.

The most widely used pragmatic definition is that intelligence is what
intelligence test measure. The ironic circularity is intentional. IQ tests
as near as anyone can figure seem to measure speed and flexibility of access
to short term memory.

But anyway you look at it this is a shaky foundation if you are looking to
build something of substance.
