Hi Peter,

You said:
>Re quotations from ZAMM and Lila, I don't think Pirsig's word is sacrosanct.
>They were great books both of which I read several times. ... Anyway I'm open
>to the possibility that Pirsig's ideas may be
>tuned up and refined some.

Steve:
I didn't mean to say that Pirsig's words should be treated as gospel. I just
mean that he has exceptional language skills and explains his philosophy with
such clarity that I prefer to use his own quotes to understand what he means by
his own terms .

I have no problem with tuning up or refining Pirsig's work, but I think most
people who see some problem or need for refinement aren't understanding what
Pirsig is saying. They think Pirsig got it wrong in places where they actually
have Pirsig wrong.

So when for example Bo says that the intellectual level is really the SOM level
while Pirsig specifically said that this SOL interpretation isn't a coprrect
interpretation of his MOQ, I want to look at what Pirsig says he means by the
intellectual level and what Pirsig says he means by SOM to show why they aren't
the same.
Then if Bo still disgrees with Pirsig on SOL we can figure out whether Bo is
thinking of intellect differently than Pirsig, SOM differently than Pirsig, or
both or neither.

In my understanding of Pirisg, to say that the intellectual level is the value
of the S/O distinction is a huge misunderstanidng of Pirsig since his levels
are types of patterns of value. A level isn't "the value of" anything. I
haven't gotten anywhere with Bo on that end so I thought I'd try the other side
to see where Pirsig and Bo may be using SOM differently.

Peter:
>My policy lately is that I'll rely on refining my
>own ideas through feedback and discussion on this forum.

Steve:
Sounds like the best policy to me.

Peter:
>One thing that never ceases to surprise and frustrate on this forum is how
>people can, despite careful attention to clarity, apparently disagree when
>they really agree and vice versa. If nothing else joining in this forum
>will, I hope, improve my English and make me more patient.

Steve:
I guess that's just the nature of such a discussion group. It's boring to just
agree. You want to look for that one thing you disagree on to argue about.

Where do you think Pirsig's MOQ needs to be tuned up or refined?

One place I disagree with RMP is that I see some animals as having social
patterns while he wants the social level to apply just to humans.

Regards,
Steve
