Being a practicing Hindu, I can't help but challenge that last statement...  I 
think Pirsig's experience with the "Hindu understanding" is very limited in 
it's scope and perhaps a tad colored by an inherent chauvinism.

I wouldn't dismiss it as chauvinism. He accuses christianity of producing the 
same "clap-trap". He says all religions do this, more or less. Any sort of 
static pattern can become too static, but religions are notoriously 
conservative and so tend to fossilize more than other forms.
