I am assuming you have a Judeo-Christian background (from upbringing).
If that is the case, you are conditioned to believe that Religion,
Philosophy and "Mysticism" are mutually exclusive.
In the Eastern traditions, nothing could be farther from the truth.

I'd recommend reading "The Heathen in His Blindness" to get a better
understanding of why/how Western Science/Philosophy is conditioned by
dogma at the deepest and most sub-conscious level.

Conditioning of any sort has not taken well in my case. I have read pretty
widely in comparative religion. I choose to focus on the Judeo-Christian
tradition for the reasons I outlined before. I would describe myself as a
Taoist. I have read and re-read the Tao Te Ching about 50 times. But I
frankly have no interest what-so-ever in Taoist practice or tradition.

I have on many occasions argued that Christian practices like speaking in
tongues, snake handling and faith healing are valid mystical practices on a
par with meditation. And personally beyond and physical or mental health
benefits they offer, I find them equally worthless.

List price on the book you recommend is $279. That's a deal buster for me
regardless of any other reservations I might have had on the face of it.
