Exactly Marsha, I would tell my students the same thing. They would get all caught up in the critique, I would explain that this is not self expression this was painting for the preconceptions of others, when you paint for yourself it becomes a different thing it becomes art. The old adage was commercial art sells a product, fine art sells itself. But true art, the stuff that sets our souls a fire is the art done for Arts sake, the experience of doing it.
