Have you ever been to a powwow?
SA: I wanted to get back to this, and now I'm able
to.
Yes, I have been to powwows. I introduced my
wife to them, and therefore she has gone with me as
well. I haven't been to any since my son has been
born. We will probably go at some point in time, I
wouldn't doubt this summer.
Once at a powwow I approached this man that was
honored for doing participating in the Sun Dance not
too long before the powwow. I went up to this man
after the honors and dancing were finished. He was at
a tented booth with women, girls, and boys I believe.
I believe he was the oldest male in the tent, and he
was only around 20 years old I would say. I
approached the tent, and said how I honored his
experience, said he was very brave, and that I
respected him. Then after this giving of respect, I
mentioned how I went on a vision quest... and before I
could go any further all the people in the tent took
off very fast, except the man. They disappeared very
suddenly, very knowingly, very instinctively one might
say. As if somebody called your name, you turn and
look, they suddenly throw a ball at you, and like a
gut reaction you quickly move out of the way or catch
the ball. The man approached me with kindness and
calmly said, "We don't talk about these things unless
we're around a fire." Thus, a proper place was
referenced to me. I said I understand. He invited me
to the fire they were going to have that night. Thus,
a proper time, too. I really wanted to go, but I was
with friends that drove and they wanted to leave. We
were over 45 minutes by car from where I lived. I
couldn't stay, but that was a very interesting, sudden
moment.
