Steve: I don't see this as a leap of faith at all. I think the argument that Pirsig makes is that since morals (traditionally thought of as social) are about values and biological patterns can also be thought of as values, then we can talk about biological and other patterns in terms of morality as well. In fact, we already do this since what we often call good and evil can be analyzed in terms of a biological-social moral code (the conflict of the biological and social level value patterns). We don't accept this on faith, we are convinced (or not) by his argument.
