SA: Arlo is talking about culture, thus, were "ideas"
come in. All people, individuals yes they are people
too, are their culture. Culture may allow for
innovators or not, this depends on the creativity of
any culture. It also depends on what a culture
defines as innovative and creative.
The Amerindian Plains people, such as the
Lakota, were very individualistic. They, as
individuals, would make individual medicine wheels
according to their individual visions. They would
find individual honor that could lead to respect given
by the rest of their society when in battle an
individual would count coup on an enemy (touch an
enemy with a couping stick, their hand, etc...).
Therefore instead of killing the enemy this
'touch'/counting coup would deem the individual high
status and tremendous respect. This activity is
honored greatly in their culture and the individual is
identified as a great warrior. Einstein would have
been counting coup if he was Lakota not thinking about
E=mc2 and such - hopefully. If Einstein was thinking
all the time, instead of counting coup, hunting, or
something good for the culture, then thinking E=mc2
all day would have not been understood in the Lakota
culture. It doesn't fit into their value system. He
would have probably been thought of as lazy or
something.
It is culture dependent on what an individual will
do or not.
