[Craig] Whether the first life form evolved on earth or came from outer space, evolution from (self-replicating) inorganic patterns is still the best explanation. [Krimel] Alien infestation has always been high on my list but it doesn't really solve the problem of where alien life came from. I think it is important to note that evolution was never and has never been proposed as a theory to explain the origins of life. It offers a breath takingly beautiful account of what life does and how it adapts to the changing conditions on earth. Any theory of the origins of self replicating molecules though is more likely to come from biochemistry of perhaps geology. [Platt] Further, the question arises of how did any inorganic patterns begin to self-replicate and why? There would be no need for metaphysics if science had, or could have, all the answers. [Krimel] Metaphysical ideas like earth, wind, fire and air as the basic elements? Or the seven concentric heavens giving off the music of the spheres. Or the one about the earth being created by a giant dung beetle? In fact until the late 17th century all physics was metaphysics. Now there is hardly any left. Do tell Platt which of the many theories or metaphysical notions of origins do you find most compelling? Enjoy it while you can.
