I know what you mean Marsha, It wasn't my kinda scene first time around on the radio - nerdy sci-fi guy stuff. The books themselves I read after I became intersted in ... errr ... philosophy ... prompted by my kids (boys wouldn't you know). They are excellent with that perspective.
The film of 3 or 4 years ago is in fact very good on the philosophical-life-experience angle, in particular the examples I mention, and more.
