Matt:
Well, sorry I misunderstood what you meant.  I thought you were unironically 
saying that the Whale Scene was a good way to get a bead on what pre-conceptual 
experience was.  On the other hand, what you take Adams to be saying (though I 
stay away from authorial intention with Adams) is, basically, what I just said. 
 As far as I can tell.  That's irony.
