Through much, maybe most, of man's history we
have lived in a garden of wild gods. Awe striking
figures that emerge and in the pervasive way
of social theorems they remain a part of the weft of
the traditional cloth we wrap our children in.

Yet from the other direction, the human practice
of acting upon cause to create effect, the invocation
of the god-pattern as a conjuring 'Swiss-army knife'
individuals stands in their own relationship.

Throughout much of the territory that a geographer
would color as Buddhist for the key of the map
labeled 'Faith' it is common practice for the individual
to overlay Buddha with the god-pattern.

It is the habit of people to pray to him in a way that
were he present would occasion another lecture on
the difference between enlightenment and faith that
in his life showed his intent.

It seems not an Occidental accident, but a human
attempt to manipulate what is beyond our reach
that instantiated the god-pattern.

thanks--mel
