I'm not sure how you are setting up the 'argument'. Did gravity
exist before Newton? No. There was no recognized pattern before
Newton's law of universal gravitation. Although the label 'gravity'
had been used prior to Newton, and there were a bunch of men looking
for a useful pattern to represent it. If you want more you'll need
to set up a broader problem.
