Platt --
The universal drive to betterness is teleological. As for a Creator
you do not allow for a Creator of a Creator, ad infinitum. Your
metaphysics eventually falls into the black hole described by
Godels Theorem. Quality needs no Creator -- it is timeless:
Quality needs no explanation -- it is what is happening as you
read these words.
Quality that "needs no Creator" is a euphemism. Quality is man's measure of
Value. It requires a sensible agent to be realized. Indeed, value is the
very essence of sensibility. Unrealized value is an oxymoron.
As you can see, Platt, I'm not buying Pirsig's "Quality is All" thesis. For
the record (Gödel's Theorem notwithstanding), the Essence posited in my
metaphysics is "uncreated" and therefore does not invoke an infinite
regression of causes. That said, I respectfully bounce your Hamlet quote
back to the MoQ author: "There are more things in heaven and earth, Mr.
Pirsig, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." Most notably, the
fundamental source.
Best wishes,
Ham
P.S. I'm not buying gold either.
