[Willblake2] I am on Platt's side here, I believe he was using the non-PC attitude of anti-Christianity as an example of where those PC folk talk out of both sides of their mouths. It is a political tool, hence the name. The tool is used by both sides to a point which drives me nuts, and people appear to be under an illusion that it is real.
I differentiate between the political tool, and common decency and respect, which appears to me to have nothing to do with PC. How can the manipulation of others involve respect? [Krimel] I would say that PC is nothing more than common decency and respect. Clearly this can and has been carried to extremes by some and has justly been made the butt of ridicule. What really occurs to me in this regard is that much has been made by the new agers in our midst about the value of compassion. I think unconditional love is a bit much to ask and in the western tradition we have a similar but less ambitious idea, tolerance. You don't really have to love your neighbor just tolerate him. But as for the alleged lack of PC respect for Christians this is just another talk show inversion along the lines of "class warfare". The Christians most likely to be targeted for negative comments and "discrimination" are targeted not for being specifically Christian but for being flatly un-American. Conservative Christians of the evangelical or charismatic type seek to force their religious beliefs on everyone else. >From blue laws to forcing the teaching of ID to protesting choice in reproductive health matters, their attempts to inflict their particular beliefs on everyone else is both anti-American and blasphemous. [Willblake2] I would go so far as to say that PC has actually diminished our respect for others. It' has just created a bunch of whining individuals, and a fear of the PC Gestapo. George Orwell would be proud. [Krimel] I seriously disagree that PC even in its wacko form has diminished our mutual respect for each other's differences. I still remember when it was common to call black men Boy and when no one reported spouse and child abuse. In fact it was radiologists who actually "discovered" child abuse.
