Andre: Hi Krimel: Actually it was published in 1946 and covers definately more than international politics. I have read it and will not claim to understand everything (I will re-read it and use as a reference). However, it has shed loads of light on national (internal) and international relations (not only politically, but also religious, economic, social, ideological from the point of view of the undifferentiated/ differentiated aesthetic continuum) analysing the situation of specific countries. It is a difficult but important book and has also deepened my appreciation of Pirsig's work. I can highly recommend it Krimel. (I purchased a wonderful, beat up second-hand copy via amazon.com to keep it affordable.[couldn't get it here in Holland].
[Krimel] '46 is maybe a bit early to be called 'cold war' but it certainly is the time when the cold war was heating up. Northrop's book seem to be the kind of thing that would warrant a spot on Stewart or Colbert if published today. He talks early on about the significance of meetings with Chinese diplomats representing Chang Kai Shek so he is a little behind the curve. I really don't think that Northrop is either too long at 500 pages or too challenging, I would simple say it is too dated. But especially as a guide to Pirsig's views on east west relations and politics in general, I suspect it is very valuable.
