John the Idealist gave us a wiki whittle... *Idealism* is the philosophical theory that maintains that the ultimate<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultimate>nature of reality is based on mind or ideas. It holds that the so-called external or "real world" is inseparable from mind, consciousness, or perception.
Then John said: That, to me seems soundly within the bounds of the MoQ. And it is the RIGHT definition of Idealism because it is the wiki answer. dmb says:I think the MOQ does look a lot like idealism BUT it's important to notice that this is not SUBJECTIVE idealism. Even if all idealists agreed that the so-called external world is inseparable from mind or consciousness, they might still disagree as to what sort of mind or consciousness was meant. Subjective idealism is one of the possibilities within subject/object metaphysics and in that case we'd be talking about the Cartesian self, a pre-existing mental substance that is inseparable from the world. Royce, James, Dewey and Pirsig all reject that conception of the self. I found some interesting comments about Royce in my copy of John Stuhr's "Pragmatism and Classical American Philosophy". "Like the pragmatists, Royce affirmed a strongly anti-Cartesian view of the self: 'Whatever the self is it is not a thing. It is not, in Aristotle's sense, a Substance.'" "Royce's holistic anti-Cartesian view of the self, so in concert with that of James and Dewey and other pragmatists, is a wholesome corrective to the current reductionism of behaviorists or identity-state materialists who would reduce self to a repertoire of behavior or collections of brain states." It seems we don't have any major disagreements between Royce and the radical empiricists (James, Dewey, Pirsig, etc) on this particular point. To the extent that they are idealists, they would all be idealists of the non-subjective variety. I suppose it'll be Royce's absolutism and religiosity that'll distinguish him from these others. I'll bet there are books and papers about the disagreements between Royce and James. If a guy wanted to split hairs in that area, he'd look into them. This guy doesn't want to do that, at least not right away. I'm just saying, IF a guy wanted to... _________________________________________________________________ Windows Liveā¢: Keep your life in sync. http://windowslive.com/explore?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_BR_life_in_synch_052009 Moq_Discuss mailing list Listinfo, Unsubscribing etc. http://lists.moqtalk.org/listinfo.cgi/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org Archives: http://lists.moqtalk.org/pipermail/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org/ http://moq.org.uk/pipermail/moq_discuss_archive/
