That is for sure, Mr. Buchanan sir; idealism is a tent that houses an awful
lot of variety. As I'm learning.

It seems we don't have any major disagreements between Royce and the radical
empiricists (James, Dewey, Pirsig, etc) on this particular point. To the
extent that they are idealists, they would all be idealists of the
non-subjective variety.
I suppose it'll be Royce's absolutism and religiosity that'll distinguish
him from these others.

[John]

Yes and my barely-formed hypothesis concerning Royce's religiosity is that
it is the main reason for his relative obscurity. But I must say, reading
him in light of Pirsig reminded me of when Phaedrus sat down and read the
Lao Tzu substituting Quality for the Tao. When I read Royce's description
of Absolute Thought and substitute Quality, I get a similar shiver.

I'll bet there are books and papers about the disagreements between Royce
and James. If a guy wanted to split hairs in that area, he'd look into them.
This guy doesn't want to do that, at least not right away. I'm just saying,
IF a guy wanted to...

[John]
dibs! I'm game. I've always been a fan of the underdog. The theme of the
last meeting of the Josiah Royce Society was titled "Josiah Royce and the
Lost Cause".

I've got a rough outline of the main differences between James and Royce
which I don't have time to set out this morning... maybe a long lunch
today.

There is a website for a 2007 conference at Harvard Divinity School entitled
"William James and Josiah Royce a Century Later; Idealism and Pragmatism in
Dialogue" which contains streaming media of scholars reading their papers so
you don't have to do any reading. I like to listen as I drop off to sleep.

I did notice that scholars, as a rule, are not very good readers.

And sincere appreciation for just being here for me David. I find your
knowledge and insights extremely valuable and I'll profit from any criticism
you can throw my way and I PROMISE I will never say "fuck you" if you see
fit to refute my brilliance.
