[Craig] But inter-racial marriage has existed for thousands of years throughout the world. Generally, gay marriage as an insitution is very recent.
[Arlo] Hmm.. I'm not entirely sure this is true, I'll have to look into it, can you toss me some support that "inter-racial" marriage was accepted/standard/acknowledged "for thousands of years". I seem to recall most "tribes" or ancient civilizations to not acknowledge marriage outside the "tribe" (so this pretty much includes "inter-race" couples). [Craig] Also only particular combinations of races were prevented from marrying. [Arlo] Again, I don't know. If we are talking "thousands of years", I think the evidence would show that "marriage" was only permitted "intra-group". [Craig] Those who oppose gay or mixed-race marriage are also fearful that the marriages will be strong, because that will encourage others. [Arlo] This is kinda crazy, Craig. Are YOU going to be become gay if you see a strong gay-married coupled down the street? Would that tempt you to become gay? And isn't STRONG marriages, which I suppose you mean supportive, loving, kind, mutual, etc., the GOAL? Shouldn't we be happy if this would occur, instead of fearful? [Craig] The fear was that mixed-race children would be the result of the marriage. [Arlo] You may be right, I don't have a full list of all the arguments used against inter-racial marriages in front of me, but if this is true, its pretty weak. It's like saying, "since I will hate your child, you can't get married". [Craig] Don't know, I missed the ending of that show. [Arlo] But I asked what YOU think. Should the state, in your opinion, dissolve that marriage? If yes, then based on what? Lack of male genitalia? That one now "acts" female? What? If no, then it's okay for two biological females to be married only if at one point one of them had a penis? Does this mean a lesbian couple could opt for one to have undergo sex-op to become a male, get married, then undo the surgery? Since the end result is the same, why put this couple through so much pain?
