Nick: I already went over this. Maybe you missed it. Pursuit of happiness is from ancient greece. Happiness in ancient greece is not the way logical positivist ulitarians define happy (they define it as a biological pleasure). Happiness before the advent of ulitarian logical positivists who redefined reality vacuous of value, this happiness when value was understood is translated from ancient greece as "flourishing". Flourishing means happiness, well-being, quality. Not all flourishings are natural rights. Courage is a virtue (a flourishing) but that is not law reviewable. What I said above is this and I already said it in a post to Marsha: Life (the birth-death cycle) is not the ultimate end or else there would be no way to make a distinction between a dog, logical positivist, or Pirsig. Each of them are life (person). Each of them are on the birth-death cycle (also definition of life). Reality for rational humans is more than mere survival. The Ultimate telos end is flourishing. Due to flourishing we can define with flourishing, in other words, we can define with quality the distinctions between these three birth-death cycles. We can say that Pirsig is flourishing more than a logical positivist. We argue this in many ways. ZMM and Lila are arguments that Pirsig was onto something of a better quality than logical positivists. Quality goes further than just looking at the person. A virtuous person is pursuing happiness. A virtuous person, in other words, is pursuing quality (excellence). that's the context in which I wrote that Nick -- Be Yourself @ mail.com!
