Reactionary means right-wing, ultraconservative, old-fashioned, unprogressive,
redneck and the like.
Craig replied:You're confusing categorical with relative concepts. "Right-wing"
or "ultraconservative" locates a position along a spectrum that has "left-wing"
or "ultraliberal" at the other end, according to some principle of
categorization (e.g., private vs. government). "Reactionary" means "reacting
against current trends". For instance, in regard to school vouchers, generally
liberals are reactionary.

dmb says:Since the terms I equated with "reactionary" came from my thesaurus,
your assertion that I'm confused about what it means is downright Orwellian. In
effect, you're saying liberal are reactionaries because they oppose reactionary
policies. Right. And slavery is freedom.
People who support school vouchers aren't necessarily reactionary but most
people who favor it are reactionary. Same with home schooling and the attempts
to break up the teachers union. All of these are efforts to undo public
education and return to the days of old. I'm sure you could confirm this
demographic fact if you were really interested in the truth. There have been
polls on these topics.
