just a reminder:
you cannot understand the MOQ if you are thinking in SOM
you can understand SOM if you are thinking in MOQ.

The MOQ integrates SOM; SOM isn't able to comprehend the MOQ.

this point is illustrated day in day out by krimel and many others who keep
trying to understand the MOQ from a SOM viewpoint. nothing can be gained in
this way.

SOM is dualistic; the MOQ is monistic.

as with the first chapter of the tao te ching, the one (tao, quality)
*precedes* the two (yin/yang, subject/object).

what pirsig did and is asking us to do is no easy thing; it is rather
'matrix-ish' - it requires one to 'bracket' the world, to borrow from husserl.
maya.

as with taoism or buddhism or hinduism, we see the resonances of the MOQ with
the perennial philosophy, which can be summarised by tat tvam asi - thou art
that....or from closer to home, gnothi se auton - know thyself.

these aphorisms reveal the fundamental unity of self and world and 'god', of
knower and known; but as with all abstract ideas they do not directly reveal.
the direct experience of this unity is much more efficacious - revelatory. this
is why indigenous cultures took psychedelics, chanted, drummed, fasted etc etc.
this is what pirsig realised when he took peyote.

to cast aside the enduring wisdom of the most enduring cultures (including our
own) is sheer folly, and a case of pathological hubris.
why would these philosophies endure if they didn't work? pragmatic criterion!

SOM, in its mature form, is about 400 years old, and it has led us to the brink
of extinction. alienation from the natural world and schizophrenia is the
psychic result. it has served its purpose (relating to the evolution of the
intellect from the social) and now is being superceded, integrated within a
more coherent and comprehensive metaphysical model. this process represents the
culmination of intellect

the intellect frees the individual from social control, from coercion and
oppression, but the social level provided a home for the individual - a sense
of identity and meaning; the incredible vigour of fundamentalist religious
whackos - christian, moslem and jew - are testament to this schism, this lack:
the individual has been loosed from an anachronistic and infantile
interpretation of religious truth, but where doe he call home now? nihilism is
a stepping stone to a direct personal spirituality.

which is where we are at now. we are seeking a reconnection, a personal
reconnection (see campbell's creative mythology for great stuff on this) to the
divine, with intellect as our guide. but for this to occur we have to use
intellect artistically; prosaic scientific generalities are not personal - they
are social- they seek to explain reality as something independent of our own
unique natures - this is regressive.

intellect must yield to the rhythm and logic of mythopoetry in order to reach
the subtle comprehension necessary to a personal connection to the divine. it
cannot be approached head-on, literally: we obscure what we seek when we do
that. very male.

no offense to the guys here, but for girls this knowledge is easier to grasp.
the return of the witch, the wise woman, is upon us. the woman is more
receptive than the man, generally speaking. she is less likely to impose her
own conceptual schema on the world, rather she is better able to discern the
subtle order within chaos - the world is order incarnate.
(this is why jackson pollock's drip paintings were so valued - he captured that
chaotic order.)

ever seen 'i love huckabees'? - when the two main characters bash each other in
the face with a blow up ball to shock each other zen style into a state of pure
being? "it's like i am a rock, a tree, a blade of grass or some mould. whatever
is around"
