I'd respectfully disagree with the author on this one. When you find yourself in a bad situation, your butt sittin' on a metaphorical hot stove, so to speak, you get off. The hippie movement knew society was headed in a bad direction BY the low biological quality of it's intellectual ideas (narrow egoistic domination of nature by industrial society at the cost of everyone's health for instance) and it was against this low biological quality that much of the movement was inspired. There are vital existential reasons beyond the pragmatic ones also. In that moment of leaping off the stove, you haven't figured out where you want to go yet, you just get off. So it was with the hippies. They hadn't evolved the intellectual tools needed to properly analyze and follow Quality, so they did the best they could with "going back to nature". Some in a shallow reactionary way that didn't really go anywhere, but others in a positive and thoughtful direction that is still working out today. We have right here in Nevada County California, one of the most successful communes, Ananda Village, as close-by example.
