Mary: The think the MoQ is Pirsig's way of trying to make Buddhism understandable to Westerners. Not better, just understandable.
Andre, Hi Mary, a dummies guide? I do not think so. Mr. Pirsig was a 'student' of Northrop and having read Northrop it can be argued that Mr. Pirsig's MoQ is an attempt at integrating East and West metaphysically, by postulating Quality as the 'source' (as the East has done so for thousands of years ...but using other names) and combining the 'immediately apprehended' (direct experience plus its philosophical insights) with the Western's scientific, theoretical insights and postulates. Pirsig did change a few things (mainly names) to make its Eastern component more 'acceptable' to the Western mind. Imho.
