John said to dmb:
How does it help my existence to think of "unpatterned value"? It's a term
that has no intrinsic value (by definition) and therefore cannot do me any good
(by definition). Where's the good in it? Answer me that, and I'll consider
it, otherwise, it makes no sense.

dmb says:
Seriously? The kind of people who have no use for this could be described with
terms like "square", "tightass" or "autistic dude". If you're feeling naughty,
such a person would be described as an "artless fuck". The good it does, for
starters, is it keeps people from calling you names and it keeps them from
thinking you're unfun and uncool. (Since you've decided to act like a
belligerent teenage, I thought I'd just play along.)

Too bad James had no response to Royce's refutation, you'll be on your own for
that. He who dies last gets the last word.

dmb says:

I'm not even slightly interesting in responding to Royce's refutation. Maybe,
if I could believe that you actually understand it yourself I'd be a little
more tempted. But I think Hegel was insane and that the "Absolute" is a
completely ridiculous idea. If you're up to the task of defending anything
Hegelian, hey knock yourself out. But I say it'll never, ever happen.
