But don't you consider religion to be a major component of culture. 
Living in the same geographic area hasn't tended to lessen sectarian strife 

between Iraqi Sunnis & Shiites, Palestinian Muslims & Jews, Lebanese  
Muslims & Christians, Northern Irish Catholics & Protestants, Indian 
Hindus & Muslims...
