Hi Khaled

Actually I did not. The Chinese developed their earlier versions which in
later iterations become the printing press in europe.
I could also add the mariner's compass and the examination system. The arabs
could charge for use of the algebra and the number 0.

There is an exhibition in London of inventions from the Islamic heritage and
they would do the intelletual level of the Muslim world proud. More at
http://www.1001inventions.com/exhibition/science-museum. Not half-baked by
any yardstick.

The patent system goes to the very heart of the success of western science
and technology. The focus was on the "individual" owning his innovations and
inventions and the idea of copyright from music to art and literature; all
works of the intellect; overtherwise known as intellectual property. This
system became pervasive with the colonial expansion into the new world and
the east; expropriating all resources and peoples under some kingdom, god or
other entity. The East, in spite of their intellectual advances did not
adopt or develop a patent system. Innovation and inventions were trade
secrets, learned from one apprentice to another, maybe not a great model for
rapid commercialisation but great for the public domain.

But what we have today is the patent system taken to the extreme where genes
and lifeforms can be patented, nothing short of biopiracy.

Best Rgds !
