Royce's explication of the four evolutionary personalities reveals a great deal about personalities we find in the world and on this forum.
For instance, his lowest type, in evolutionary terms, the Stately or Heroic Self, describes the Academic world very well. Just imagine to yourself all those stately academics in the teacher's lounge, each trying to prove his worth to the college by his superior grasp of this or that. The Heroic self competes individually for the society's affirmation. His achievement can be athletic, or intellectual - cramming more philosophology into his skull than others, for instance. Royce's evaluation of this type is that because his emphasis is upon being the most outstanding individual in a group, this type makes a poor ideal upon which to model and formulate a society. For instance, a teacher holds his position because he knows more than the students. This can be a relatively good thing, but the teacher achieves the exact same social status if he can dumb down his students, rather than excelling himself. Remember the Chairman in ZAMM - his insulting and belittling manner was intended to convey the excellence of his attainment by emphasizing the low-quality of the student's attainments. This self does not promote the overall good of the class or the society. All he does is jealously guard his own turf and social position. He is marked by his arrogance, his insulting manner, his belittling of others, his refusal to encourage or engage his audience on any but his own narrowly defined terms and grounds where he cannot be challenged. Royce was never like this as a teacher. His students loved him for his willingess to listen, to engage, even at times, submit the podium so they could work out for themselves their own philosophical developments.
