I knew my ironic Phlbttt would go sailing right over somebody's head. > I agree with Matt that for Pirsig to become of interest to academia, either > people interested in Pirsig need to get into academics and become important > by saying interesting things about what academia is already interested in, > or someone already important needs to get interested in Pirsig. How else > could it possibly happen? Well honestly Steve, its been enough years now to get a feel for the way the wind blows and my judgement of the situation is that it's simply not going to happen. Notice the title of this thread? "Futile quest"? I thought I had an interesting idea about comparing the "outcasts" of philosophy to examine what they have in common so that trait could be analyzed. But that was just whining I guess and it'd be better. more pragmatic, to just go along with the status quo. Why, if the professional academics weren't correct, they wouldn't be in their high positions of authority and wisdom in the first place! Duh! If I ever bump into her, I'll beg for Oprah's endorsement and remember to genuflect towards UC Davis on my way past to D-Q University where the ignorant rabble hang out. Certainly not through whining about being ignored. > Do you really think there is some anti-Pirsig conspiracy at work? Or > anti-new idea conspiracy? No one becomes important in philosophy or science > or anything else in academia by repeating old ideas (unless it can be done > in some new interesting way). > I agree completely. In fact, that's gonna be my new mantra. I agree completely. If acceptance is predicated upon conformity and agreeableness, then it's a simple matter I guess to just go along with the mainstream of philosophy and academia and media and politics with a chipper attitude and if I feel I have something to say in the future, I'll make sure it's really well-thought out in the right professional format, with proper footnotes, a bibliography in the back, and a nod from Jon Stewart bequeathing celebrity acceptance. No more whining from me! Heck no.
