> > > [Arlo] > So basically its Eden (everything "harmonious") until "man" comes along > with > his "intellect" and mucks things up? > > I don't think intellect is evil, Arlo. But I do think evil exists and when it manifests, it's roots are ultimately found in intellect. Admiring another man's wife is not evil, for instance. Brooding upon it and planning his murder, on the other hand, is. Killing for food and self-defense to meet biological needs out of desperation is not evil. And ultimately, two tribes fighting for territory is not evil, although each demonizes the other and that process might well be evil.
Since you bring up "Eden", I'll use the story therein to describe the arising of evil - the fruit of knowledge of good and evil is not, in itself, evil. In the story the fruit is GOOD (everything is) But taking it out of its proper context is where the trouble starts. It leads to Intellectually exalting the self to the detriment of others, and I'd say that is evil. So good is an intellectual concept that represents patterns which promote living and life as a whole. Evil is an intellectual concept that represents "the death force" that Pirsig refers to. That which hates life and dynamicism.
