Yes, exactly right, and the sports illustration is excellent.
It's the same message I just finished in my monologue to
Arlo about the fundamental continuum between "meaning"
and "overall coherence" in reading, which is parallel to the
entwinement (contra Saussure) of the diachronic and
synchronic. Every time I tried to insert narrative's
importance in the monologue, the entwinement there is "
narrative" and "theory."
