Hello Magnus,
i've just been reading your Stacks material.

Your aim is to reduce confusion between contributors by allowing them to
understand each other better.
What a good idea.

Applying this to our little chat, it seems to me you are considering what
patterns are, and i am considering what patterns do. Patterns, and functions of
patterns.

Within each layer of patterns (the what is) there are two functions (the what
they are doing) as stated in Lila.

The pyramid structure analogy establishes what is.
The self-regulation aspect is what is happening in order for evolution to
advance. It may also be a good way of establishing what is at the same time
when both functions are considered together. Which they are come to think of it
in Lila.

For example, atoms may be Homeostatic.
For this to be so there would presumably be a static function and a dynamic
function for each atom.
The static function which preserves atoms are the tight nuclear forces. The
dynamic function are the electronic shells.
Carbon has an exceptionally dynamic function.

>From a what is perspective, atoms are the wide base of your what is pyramid. I
>can't see a problem here.

Atoms form molecules, and in doing so regulate themselves. These regulations
are what we think of as chemical reactions and equilibrium. They are higher up
your pyramid or stack.

Animals are vast chemical reactions and equilibria, but at their core is their
DNA. The dynamic function of DNA is kept in homeostasis by the chemically dead
protecting proteins. These are right up your pyramid.

I could go on, but the trajectory is clear.

Thank you
Ade
