Solomon is what I would call a very decent thinker: he's not first-rate
(like Nussbaum or Foucault), but he's had a steady stream of very
intelligent writing, on a great diversity of topics, and was at the
forefront of keeping alive Continental philosophy at a time when American
philosophers weren't taking it seriously. He was also that bald philosopher
guy at the beginning of the Linklater movie, Waking Life.

I listened to a set of lectures he delivered for the Teaching Company and it
was quite good. It would appear that a host of philosophers, psychologists
and others have been looking into the area of emotions intensely for at
least 30 years now. After all, when a network has a fictionalized version of
one of the world leading emotion researchers in its primetime schedule, it
is hard to see how anyone could complain that emotions are being ignored. In
fact as a component of "consciousness" they seem to have the lead role.
Rather than a need to become more in touch with our emotions so they can
have a bigger role in rationality. I think we need to do more to shut them
up. Although, I suppose that getting in touch with them might serve to help
us recognize the power they have over us.

I like that, but I'd make sure to always go further in describing the
importance of sequence. The order narrative gives to the random collection
of junk in our mind (in contradistinction to the order concepts give to the
same collection) is requisite for the notion of identity in the face of
change. Without narrative, Neurath's Boat considerations give a philosopher
a headache.

As it turns out I either need to get reading Nussbaum really fast or not
bother. I am told she will be visiting my school sometime in the next month
or so. In fact I think she is speaking on a night I have class but the
professor is already talking about having the class just go to her lecture.
Serendipity or synchronicity? I guess as always, it's a matter of Point of
View.
