Dan said to Adrie:
...I never made the trip so I don't know what has happened to the area. But, I
would suggest doing a search for Sandy Hook, not Hills, and see what you come
up with. And yes, I would love to see the picture. Please send it to me
privately, if you don't mind.

That's right. I'm looking at Google maps right now. Sandy Hook and Sandy Hook
Bay are both in New Jersey, almost directly south of the southern tip of
Manhattan. It's a peninsula with the salty Bay on one side and the salty
Atlantic Ocean on the other. This is beyond the Hudson river. If you zoom in
real close, you can see Horseshoe Cove, where they dropped anchor. From there
he rowed ashore to fetch groceries from a tiny town called Highlands, if memory
serves. The grotto must have been somewhere along the shore of Horseshoe Cove.
If you zoom in all the way and follow the shoreline there are a few features
that could be the grotto, but it's hard to see anything that small from space.
I think the area was totally trashed at the time Lila was written and would be
in very stark contrast with the images of Currier and Ives.
