True enough.  That a math problem is difficult, is no reason to give up on it.
But as you say, it's different for a political problem.  They are "Newtonian"--
their uncertainty increases with the square of their difficulty.  It gets to 
the point where,
out of ignorance, you're doing more harm than good.
