Hi, Tuukka Virtaperko -
The artistic accomplishment is instrumentally a great philosophical
accomplishment, because given teh prevailing academic atmosphere, few
would have cared of Pirsig's thoughts unless one of the books, which
communicate these thoughts, would have been a best seller.
What a shame, eh? I think it's wonderful how he gave us a solid
demonstration of "Quality in Freshman Composition," right in our hands. A
post-modern person could do a lot about the non-hard-edged self-reference
aspects of ZAMM. Again, Godel comes to mind.
If one does not readily speak the language and think the thoughts that are
required in the academy, one must turn himself into a big thing outside
the academy before the academy will recognize his effort.
A silly thing about the Academy. Silly, silly. As soon as I began reading
about the MOQ, I thought "Oh!" It seemed refreshing as a spring breeze. I
might grouse about this and that, but at its core it's sound and
health-giving. If Bob is still worried about not being taken seriously by
the Academy, he shouldn't. It speaks well of him that he isn't, but in times
to come he will be. That's why I like the outriders, like Watts or Nietzsche
or Stirner or Rand.
Instead, it can approach the culture surrounding the work as an
anthropological phenomenon.
Reminds me of a certain Metaphysics that speaks Social with Intellectual
patterns. : p
many capable people before Pirsig
Does he have any predecessors that come to mind? I think he's hit well on
the Western Tao.
One of my favorite moments in ZAMM is where it's realized that the DeWeeses,
as Romantics, look with some horror upon technology and feel it's got a
death force in it. Brilliant! Rousseau takes it on the chin there. One
reason I like Rand (again) and Camille Paglia. I extend that realization
into economics wholesale.
