Matt: I think, in the vocabulary established by the idea of an "ideal reader" (which follows out of the Pirsigian position that it's all rhetoric), what you're saying is that you are your own ideal reader. Does that sound more hospitable? As Dave said, it's just a heuristic, but in terms of philosophy, if it is all rhetoric, that means there is always an audience.
