I think that you can represent Will with the intellect.  I am not sure
if recognition is an element of substance.  Sure it can be considered
as the cart before the horse.  I prefer to think of it as reflection.
The reflection is only a reflection.

Well, all I can say is that we did not get our sentience out of the
blue.  We are not Gods.  I suppose it all depends on how one defines
sentience.  Human sentience could be one form of sentience.
