[DM]
Sure the SQ we identify is stable in the moment, but look more widely and you
are bound to have a SQ and DQ mix

[Arlo]
Sigh. David, who said otherwise? SQ is in constant response to DQ. You keep
repeating things that really don't address what I've said, and act like its
something I've overlooked.

[DM]
You can say we should make a clear SQ or DQ divide, but in a wider view any
process is a mix of SQ and DQ but it is all quality as you say.

[Arlo]
That static quality responds to Dynamic Quality, that 'the train has a cutting
edge', isn't an argument against understanding the MOQ's central distinction
between 'static' and 'dynamic' Quality. If you can make that initial
metaphysical distinction, the entire rest of Pirsig's metaphysics is rendered
incoherent. It becomes a distinction without a difference. Why some people need
to write a half-dozen incoherent paragraphs to say static quality is the
"quality of order, [which] preserve[s] our world" and dynamic quality is the
quality of "freedom, [which] creates this world" (LILA) is beyond me.

Static quality 'preserves'. The evolution ['change'] they undergo emerges as
they respond to Dynamic Quality. You (along with Marsha) continue to conflate
this interaction/oscillation (whatever analogy you prefer) into just static
quality.

[DM]
Does SQ respond to DQ or does it contain DQ that suddenly moves forward, hard
to say...

[Arlo]
"But Dynamic Quality is not structured and yet it is not chaotic. It is value
that cannot be contained by static patterns." (LILA)
"The force of evolutionary creation [DQ] isn't contained by substance [sq].
Substance [sq] is just one kind of static pattern left behind by the creative
force [DQ]." (LILA)
"... there's a Dynamic good [DQ] that is outside of any culture, that cannot be
contained by any system of precepts [sq]..." (LILA)

You can make an argument for your own personal metaphysical theory, but I don't
think you can make the argument that Pirsig's metaphysics says that 'sq
contains DQ'.

[DM]
or does quality just oscillate between dq and sq?

[Arlo]
Again, I just don't understand this. Quality can't 'oscillate' between two
things that ARE Quality. Both DQ and sq ARE Quality, they are value, but they
are metaphysically distinct types of value. It is this distinction that the MOQ
is founded upon.
