...But David, although I have respected your scholarship, your intelligence,
your insights, and most of all your friendship and high regard for Dr. Pirisg,
I have failed to find tolerance, empathy, compassion, or any other basis for
dialogue with you. Right thinking begins with right being, and you are
probably a good person. I'd like to believe that of you, but you haven't let
me see your quality in this forum. I am willing to be wrong, and I hope to be,
but I am not optimistic. I join John Carl in submitting this post prayerfully.

dmb says:

Why do you think John Carl is "justifiably indignant when abusively provoked,"
while my indignity at be abusively provoked is only worthy of a scolding? Why
is it okay for John to say "fuck you very much" and to call us (McWatt and
myself) assholes but it's not okay for me to respond in kind? What's the
difference? Why the double standard? What could be more conspicuously unfair
than a double standard? I wasn't even talking to John when he decided to drop
the f-bomb on me.

Even more importantly, your complaints are only about the tone. If you
understood the substance of my remarks, maybe you'd see that the tone is
appropriate to the substance of the matter. I think what John is doing is
outrageous and immoral. According to the MOQ's moral codes anti-intellectualism
is degenerate and anti-intellectualism is John's main theme. I'd even say that
the appeals to "tolerance, empathy, and compassion" are usually trotted out to
manipulate the situation so that being nice becomes more important than being
intellectually honest. I wouldn't be so suspicious of this complaint if it were
applied in a more principled way, as opposed to deploying selectively. That
kind of dishonesty and unfairness, even when expressed in polite tones and
without profanities, mocks and betrays your pleas for tolerance, empathy and
compassion.

I think my reaction to John's foul-mouthed slander was totally justified. And
then some.
