ROGER THINKS KEVIN HAS DONE A GOOD
JOB OF PRESENTING HIS CASE
As my title betrays, I think Kev has done an admirable job defending the
POTENTIAL for a new level. Many of the weaknesses we pointed out he has
shown can be turned back as strengths. Two twists that intrigued me include
his showing that mysticism is today a branch of intellect that is beginning
to support the intellect, but that could at a later date (or now), begin to
go out on directions of its own. The second is that our arguments that
mysticism contains all the levels is not a very convincing refutation of this
as a level, especially when we can say the same about the intellect.
The MOQ is an evolutionary metaphysics. This means both that the universe it
explains is evolving, and that the metaphysics describing it is evolving with
it. I think those folks arguing that a future level is impossible are
undermining this crucial aspect that differentiates the DQ or direct
experience of Pirsig from the empty nihilism of Buddhism and Schoppenhauer.
Evolution is not something that is apparent at the time.......it is seen in
retrospect. I think Kevin has done a splendid job of arguing that mysticism
may be a new level some day.
Let us continue the discussion, but I wanted to give Kevin some support and
recognition for a splendid argument. I will put it on follow up for a
hundred years from now, and we will see if he is right.
