MYSTIC ROGER QUESTIONS DAVE B, THEN PLATT,
THEN PIRSIG:

Dave, are you sure these quotes are for mysticism NOT being its own level?

[Below are all Dave quotes:]

"Mysticism is one of my favorite topics....."

"Mysticism is a set of intellectual patterns... not intellectual
in nature. ......"

"mysticism is post-rational. .....it goes beyond logic and science......."

"There is always a frustrating but necessary fuzziness to
idea around mysticism...... "

"the [mystic] hero's difficult return to normal life......."

"Its a matter of spiritual growth........"

"There is a sense that something has
been revealed or uncovered, but it was right there with you the whole
time."

[End quotes]

Sorry for taking them out of context, but much of your argument could be used
to support the need for a new level. You are explaining yourself that it
starts within the intellect but then progresses beyond it .

Now to be honest, I agree with you that it probably doesn't need to be a
level. But I am not beyond continuing to explore it. My guess so far is that
Pirsig gets around the issue by explaining the final moral code of dynamic
beyond static. This way he acknowledges the moral superiority of pursuing DQ
beyond the intellect.

Of course where does this leave Platt's argument that any peyote popping
crazy can declare his vision as superior? I believe Platt himself answered
this charge last month, explaining that mystical experience involves
experience from all levels. The hallucinogenic mystic needs to pragmatically
agree with experience and with truth etc. Do you all agree here? I have
always been uneasy the way Mr. P turns on the static intellect at the end of
Lila. Is he serious in stating the most moral thing he did was blurting out
that "Lila had quality" WITHOUT THINKING?????? Would it be less moral to
have thought it out? Or was the baby idol a false God?

Roger
