Ok, I am not sure how New Age shamanism applies to what I said. I was
talking about the tribe that shared peyote illumination with Pirsig and
comments Pirsig used to guide his thinking. Dussenberry's Ph.D dissertation
is explicitly about the religious practices of these people.

I do not believe adolescents of tribes past carried medicine wheels to speed
or enhance their visions.

I don't believe Mandelbaum or Dussenberry refer to the medicine wheel.
Frankly the whole idea of the wheel seems a modern attempt of capitalize on
New Age interest in mandalas.
