Excellent post. I really agree with you on this point, which is a huge part of why I don't post here that often.
Advanced meditational systems such as Mahamudra posit that attributes such as clarity are something that arises out of emptiness, and are not the result of intellectual modulation. I think many people experience "mystical awareness" and get extremely excited, thus disrupting their meditation practice and wind up getting thrown into the "lower realms". And while i've finally found some progress recently, I know that it has certainly happened to me. It is said that to be attached to beauty is still clinging which will lead to "rebirth" in a lower realm. A mystical experience tends to give the meditator a sneak peak at enlightenment... So I think many of us deep down "know" what ultimate reality is about, but our habitual patterns have obscured our vision. Again, this is from my experience.
