I would say we act authentically when we act according to a sense
of following betterness.
 
Whether it's motivation toward betterness or a simple desire for change,
people act for a wide variety of reasons.  Many people choose drugs and
alcohol to avoid suffering and numb pain.  Its feel better in the short term.
But it's clearly not following betterness.

mistake is seeing quality as something we create.  The alcoholic creates
his or her quality from a bottle.  The False Self (a la Merton et al) sees
quality as a product of their emotional programs for happiness
