[Arlo] Connor draws extensively from the idea that "intellect" emerges from the broad milieu of social action. He also rejects the notion that abstract theory drives technology, but restores "craft" to a position of respect in the larger evolution of social progress, a schism talked about in ZMM. In fact, he attributes (rightly) intellectual advances to a foundation of activity by artisans, craftspeople, laborers, and others. This creates a "ready-point" (my term) of probability where intellectual advances are more-or-less inevitable. Had it not been Pasteur, it would have been someone else.
