Is it "aware" of the difference between sunlight and a flashlight or
moonlight? Which does it "respond" to? Can it differentiate? Or is it not
"aware" of the difference?

Not as cars.  For a harder example:  does a photo-electric cell sense (= be
aware of) light?  On the one hand, that what it's designed to do.  On the
other, does it respond to light AS light?
