I usually recommend peole read Mary Parker-Follet when they ask about
compromise.

She said [approximately] "People who believe that agreeing on
middle-ground is about compromise, do not understand the first thing
about working with people." The point is win-win.

So to use this example of yours ...
I want a room painted blue, you want it painted red - we both hate purple
what is the compromise?
To find a colour scheme that inlcudes both red and blue (but not
purple) - different paint on different surfaces, different colors for
different features in the room. Or red this year blue next, different
colours at different times - depending on your budget; wall to wall
video screens that change color depending who's looking at them ? - a
million actual possibilities.

Anyway - don't see what this has to do with Horse's collective
(common) knowledge suggestion - knowledge is part of "intelligence"
but I doubt Horse was suggesting knowledge as a compromise instead of
intelligence ?
