[Platt]
You tell me. Why do they grow? Why do they try to survive?

[Krimel]
I suspect a biologist would say something like growth results from a genetic
program that evolved so as to grow like that. He could probably tell
something about how long that program has been running and a bit about its
heritage.

But if you asked me. I'd say something like:

All things survive.
If they didn't, they wouldn't be things.
And if they don't, they won't.
Shit Happens.

[Platt]
I always try to be kind, unlike some here who will remain nameless. :-)

[Krimel]
I won't tell if you don't and thanks for your discretion. ;-)
